How playing chess can make you wiser

by John Boguhn

Created on: September 05, 2009

The essential wisdom acquired through playing chess is noticeable in how it relates to life. The strategies and disciplines that are needed to play the game to consistent victory are transferable to daily ritual. Each of us make tactical maneuvers every day in order to skirt through issue deemed, "better left for another time" We position ourselves in ways that allow us to have more control over events that direct the general routine. Through the use of mental dexterity every attempt is made to gain an edge over the workings of daily life. It is the challenge to achieve that keeps us coming back for more. These are the qualities of an informed life; the tools used to make wise decisions. They are the same qualities found in Chess.

Chess games are called Matches for a reason; such as the event being about the confrontation between two rivals. It is the personal challenge that drives the game. To advance the outcome through cautious calculation; to gain victories through wise choices. Life operates in a similar fashion; needing general tasks to be flavored by a competitive edge. It adds interest. Both chess and life initiate strategies and tactics in hopes of generating the best results. They are the rule of thumb laws used to operate in a competitive world; be it the wide world or the one within the game board. These laws consist of things like:

* Assess your opponent; note their movement and positioning. Try to evaluate placement and purpose; does it leave you exposed, is there need for concern. Use defense to build a strong offence.

* Think through all moves; operate with a plan. Once a space is declared it's to late to move back. Second guessing serves no purpose, and can lead to indecision.

* Know the value of your assets. What is worth what, and what is worth risking. If sacrifice is needed, it should lead to bigger gains. If a trade off is called for there should be at least equal value in the exchange.

*Develop strategies quickly and with cautious concern. The one who is ready the soonest is the one who will be able to control the course of the game. To be that player it is necessary to develop your plan efficiently to a place of power.

*Control the center; it offers up the best chance for stronger play. It allows for the largest range of motion and direction; as well as protecting more avenues of travel. Success is bonded to flexibility and mobility; controlling the center strengthens that positions.

*Always protect the King. Never accelerate plans so
