Prophecy and Aura
Some say that there is no love greater than the love for ones spouse and children. And, if you think about it in human terms, I guess that makes sense. Still, there is another love that comes unexpectedly like burst of sunlight through dark clouds.
The love of a pet is in many ways, far more ethereally beautiful than one could imagine. I never dreamed of being adopted by an animal, (and trust me, that's exactly what having a pet feels like) let alone two.
But, when a friend at work told me with sadness that her cat had given birth to kittens and that she would have to take them to an animal shelter: where one or all might be put to sleep if no adopted them , my heart opened.
"I'll help you out." I said quickly.
"Thank you," my friend said ecstatically when I told her I would help her out "Don't worry about getting them fixed or their shots." She said her soft green eyes moist with tears.
"I'll take care of all of that. All you have to do is come and get them." She hugged me and then rushed off to get a pen and paper to writer down her address for me.
I was a little startled by the word "them". I had only planned on adopting one, but I did not have the heart to tell her no. So, one chilly fall day, with the leaves in a sweet bloom of bright oranges, reds and golden browns; I found myself sitting like a new mother in the back seat of a friends car. Beside me, whining protest from the inside of their hard plastic cat carrier, were two of the most adorable kittens I had ever seen.
"Don't worry guys." I whispered to them. "We'll be home soon."
I was in love with them from the beginning. They were such a hoot to know. Prophecy, the boy, was slate grey with a white spot that looked like a star splattered on his chest. Aura, our little princess, was exactly like her brother -minus the spot. I have to say, my eyes are tearing now, as I think of them.
While Aura was close to me, Prophecy was my protector; my certified partner in crime. His favorite thing was playing basketball(literally hitting a balled up piece of paper into an old metal trash can) and pulling the shower curtain back to watch the water fall-from a distance-while anyone in the family showered.
Aura was content to watch our games from her perch on a loft like crawl space that served as extra storage in the small apartment we lived in. The most precious times were at night. They would wait until I was nearing sleep and then (with expert timing) each would find a space to cuddle in the
