Poetry: The apple orchard

by Kiria Pepe

Created on: September 04, 2009

The apple orchard, there in the distance

It's silhouette dark against the setting sun

each tree standing proud as if about to march.

Swaying gently in the breeze of evening

with the promise of plump apples for tomorrow.

when tomorrow comes the apple pickers

descend to rid the apple tree of its treasure.

Laden baskets, heavy and cumbersome

gathered and brought together by mans need

for its golden liquid, its pungent aroma wafting

past an unsuspecting laborer, knowing he will

Fall flat on his face with just a sip or two without

A thought from whence it came and the sweat

It took to bring him those wet lips, and dizzy head.

The apple orchard, dormant now as the snow falls

Endlessly, blanketing the branches and hiding its identity.

Forgotten almost, its treasure still flowing throughout winter.

Spring brings forth melted rivers, the apple orchard

Awakening after its long sleep, to stand proud

Its silhouette dark against the setting sun.
