In the world of health care . Balancing a home life is an on going challenge. The hospital rhythm is unique to any other area of care. It is an ongoing 24/7 arena. New parents and staff welcome newborns . While in another area of the hospital, staff may be providing comfort and medication for pain or holding the hand of someone who is dying alone. This is the place where lives are saved by the on going expertise of those that have made health care their chosen profession.
The physicians and nurses who have answered this calling do so, with some sacrifice in their personal lives. How does one feel when they find themselves sitting in a school auditorium watching a school play after arriving just in time; to see the smile on their child's face ? . And emotionally, how hard was it to leave the emergency room , where they just intubated a teenager who is dying ?
Most professionals in health care will tell you , that they are able to compartmentalize their life. They say, they can leave the swinging doors of the hospital and arrive at home late for dinner without any problems. But those that live and breathe in health care know the emotional toll they pay.
Some nurses and physicians are challenged to make it work for them. Not all do it successfully. The primary love and support is from their family and friends. It is essential that their family has an understanding of the demands that are placed upon those that have chosen this profession.
Nurses often choose shifts that accommodate their family needs. However, rotation of shifts and covering staff .Especially the demands of the night shift. Make this difficult at times.
Often those that that work within a hospital, become an extended family. Bonds are formed and become valuable to them , as they mutually struggle to meet the demands of giving care.
It is a highly charged arena, with adrenaline rushes and intense situations that arise in the clinical areas of care. The highs an lows that health care professionals experience; often drains them of the reserves needed in their personal lives. However, most health care professionals will tell you, that it is who they are. They love their roles. And hate their sacrifices.
Those in the medical profession , especially nurses with young children face many more conflicting feelings, as the profession has indoctrinated them to believe that their obligations to their patients come first. The institution of health care makes little or no excuses for any personal needs
