Laid off: How to deal with unemployment

It was August 24, 2009 when I was told by the Program Director where I worked that I was being terminated that day. I hadn't expected to lose my job at this time, although I already knew the company was looking to cut back and the Director already informed everyone that they were planning to do so. After this happened my first thought was Not again. I have lost jobs in the past whenever there were company cut backs.

I know that I wasn't the only person to lose a job at any of the places that I worked for, but it has always seemed to be at the worse time for me economically and the worse time to be looking for another job. At this time I had my house on the market, but still did not have it under contract and I had a load of debts to pay, which was why I wanted to sell my home, to pay off debts. Still it was something that I could not control and had to work hard at not letting it control me as well.

After my initial shock, anger and fear of losing my job, my next thought was that it wasn't the job of my dreams and I would have left it anyway if I had another job lined up that either paid more or had more of a future. When I got the job I wanted A job that would develop my skills as a therapist, which this did, and pay the bills, which this did. So, in a sense I had accomplished my goal. The only thing was the timing of losing it.

It always seemed that in the past I would lose my job either just before the Christmas Holiday, or in July. I often wondered if the employer got to keep the extra money that wasn't being paid out until they hired a new employee. It also seemed like a time when two months later many people would be looking for work either fresh out of college or relocated. I wondered if the employer used that money for management pay raises or what?

It's been a long time since I have seen a salary increase. Actually my salary had decrease in the last several years since September 11, 2001. I had earned $52,000 in 2000 annually and my last job in 2009 was $44000 and that has been in the last four years without a pay increase. I wondered, What happened to my career goals of moving upward financially and experientially?

With the current decline in the economy and the recession, plus the increase in the population, plus the increase in immigration to the U.S. the job market is changing rapidly. So, with this I developed my own action plan after the initial tears from losing my job. The first thing I did was apply for unemployment benefits. Anyone
