Poetry: Autism

by Amber Lesovoy

Autism:

An invisible enemy,

Visible gift,

Character building, yet

A huge social rift.

How can I curse it,

It's just who you are.

Autism hurts but it's brought us so far.

Your silence means little,

Your eyes say so much,

The fact that you've come to enjoy a brief touch.

The things that you find and show me with glee,

The green of a leaf from the branch of some tree.

So many things no one thought you could do

You do them- no surprise,

I've always believed in you.

You're different, you're special,

You're unique and you're wise.

All the words in the world are empty compared

To the things you can't say when I look in your eyes.
