Having a customer service job guarantees one thing. It promises that you will run into rude customers. There are several reasons why customers can be rude. It doesn't make it okay for them to be rude to you, but the truth it, you will have to learn to deal with it.
Here are some suggestions to help you deal with rude customers:
Understand- There is nothing that a customer wants more than to have customer service people who understand where they are coming from. If there is an issue that seems to be ongoing, try to be understanding of why the customer might be getting rude. This will help you handle the situation a little bit better. Understanding the customer is one of the best ways to deal with rude customers.
Keep your cool- Just because a customer may be getting rude doesn't mean that you should do the same. Keep you cool. Don't raise your voice and don't say things you may regret once it is over with. Your job is to make sure the customer is well taken care of. Some people are just rude and don't even have a reason to be. There is no excuse for rudeness, but some people just don't care. They like to make others miserable just because they are. Don't let it get to you.
Try to resolve as quickly as possible- Figure out what the problem is and resolve it as quickly as possible. The quicker you get it taken care of the quicker you will have the rude customer away from you. Most people who are rude customers will change their attitude if they see that you are working to help them out.
Listen closely- Listen closely to every word the customer tells you from beginning to end. There may be clues in things that you don't think are important. This will help you better serve the customer better and alleviate some of the rudeness. Listening to your customer is one of the most important parts of customer service. Without that, you can't do your job well.
Know when to pass it on- There are some customers that you can't please no matter what. You may have customers that will call you names, put your down and just plain treat you poorly not matter what you do. Deal with these rude customers by passing them on to management. Management has more capability to handle these situations. Things that you can't do can be done by management. Let them handle the situations that are impossible for you to work out. The customer will end up much happier if given to a manager. Sometimes you shouldn't continue trying to handle with the rude customer.
Rudeness shouldn't have a place in anyone's life. It is unfortunate that customers sometimes they feel they have the right to abuse others. Dealing with rude customers isn't the same as dealing with rude people in our ever day lives though. There are certain things that you can and cannot do. If you want to keep your job, you have to learn how to handle and cope with rude customers. If you follow the above tips on dealing with them, you will find your job is much easier to do.
