Most of the professional nurses that I know have developed positive relationships with most of the physicians they work with. It is a matter of necessity that they do so. The uniqueness of the relationship; makes each of us dependent on the other. Therefore, it is important that each professional role be mutually respected for the inherent responsibilities they hold.
What does every nurse wish she or he could tell the doctor, if they have not done so as yet ?
* In order to care for all our patients, and for those that are under your care. It is critical that you listen and respond to our input as it relates to your patient. As nurses,we have by our close proximity to your patient , the ability to objectively see your patient's distress or their positive response to the care, that you as their physician has ordered. We do expect that you will respond to our call,when we say that it is urgent.
*As professionals, we as nurses expect to be part of the health care system in a collaborative manner with physicians, as we as nurses are caring for those that are under your care. We have more to gain if we work together, than if we exhibit or practice with any arrogance toward one another. Any patronizing or subservient manner toward nurses is unacceptable .
*Physicians can expect to be respected by nurses they work with for the physician's knowledge and the rank that they hold in the delivery of care to patients. Those professional physicians and nurses who have gained personal respect , it is because it has been earned. . Physicians can expect support from nursing that is mindful of the physician's needs. As they learn from each other within a clinical practice. United as professionals we will work toward achieving goals.
*Please be specific when writing orders for patients. Review with staff any that may be unusual or complex. This will save time searching for clarification in every area of patient care.
*Avoid the blame game. Be specific about any complaints and co-operative in their remediation. Avoid misplaced anger, directed at staff members. Be quick to apologize. Then you can expect the same in return. As with mutual respect professionals can quickly move beyond misunderstandings.
*Please be patient with our new nursing graduates as they sometimes will stumble through the complexity in the health care system. Remember that you as a first year intern may have learned some of the ropes from older seasoned nursing staff.
