Created on: September 02, 2009

Moving away from home to attend college is exciting and the beginning of a new phase in your life. There is a strong possibility that many of you leaving home have never shared a room with another person in your life. Preparation is key to your personal comfort and to feel like you are now in your "home away from home".

Top ten essentials

# l Computer

Whether you take a desk top or a lap top, you will need your own computer. Yes, there are computer rooms available for your use, but you will benefit from having your own. You will be able to work in the privacy of your room and will not have to worry there is not one available to you when you have an important assignment due.

#2 Dorm fridge

You will want to be able to keep your own food separate from your dorm mate. This will help with the relationship and you will never have to worry someone is eating your food.

#3 Microwave

There will be times when you will need a snack in the middle of the night and the food court is not open. You may tire of the dorm food and need to zap a familiar bowl of soup for comfort food. This will enable you to eat when you desire to and save some of that college cash for other things.

#4 Personal fan

Regardless of the air conditioner situation in your room, having a desk top fan will help keep the air circulating. A fan will also allow some noise in case the floor is loud and you need some sleep.

#5 Shower essentials

A shower caddy is necessary for going back and forth to the bathrooms. You will have to keep your toiletries together so you don't get in the shower and realize you forgot your shampoo. Keeping your things together will help keep you organized when you barely have one eye open and you are running late for class.

#6 School supplies

Believe it or not, you will need the basic school supplies. After all, you are there to attend class, study and make good grades. Just thought you may need a reminder now and then. Invest in a good back pack since this will go with your everywhere. This will is another good way to stay organized and if you have a laptop computer, many back packs will accommodate one. A planner will be essential for your busy schedule and help you stay organized as well.

#7 IPod or MP3 player

You will want to listen to your own music especially if your roommate has different musical taste. This will also benefit you if you need to drown out the noise around you so you can concentrate. Be sure to have a safe place to keep these personal items so nothing is
