Here comes the sun. I'm guessing we've all heard the song. After all, mainstream America has turned most Beatles songs (that I once loved) into catchy jingles or warm, feel-good car ads. However, no matter how cliche they become, there is always a lesson to be learned from the fabulous foursome. I cannot tell you how many nights I fell asleep during my adolescence to this song. Some nights it was the difference between actually sleeping or spending the majority of the night crying in my bed. I always imagined they were singing to me and what they were saying would magically come true when the sun came up the next morning. "Little darling, it's been a long, cold, stormy winter...little darling..." Adolescence can be rough for many; but, as I get older, I'm starting to realize the real reason that this song was so comforting to me.
In my younger years (not that I'm terribly old now, just seems like another lifetime ago), I used to stay out all night long, seeing how much mischief I could get myself into. There was always one constant, though - I had to stay awake long enough to see that the sun was going to rise the next morning. There would be that slim few on my friends that trudged along by my side, and we'd watch the sun rise in awe like it was the most sacred moment (or maybe the last) that we would ever have.
Looking back, it's like something happened to us in those moments. Maybe it was an awakening of some sort. Many of the most precious of my memories are these moments and some of my dearest friends to this day are the ones that most often shared these with me. Why? Millions of people stay up all night and watch the sun rise. Why am I making such a big deal about it? If you really think about it, just that single act of nature is like the most sacred of promises coming to fruition. No matter how crazy or wrecked things get in life, the sun seems to always rise just as promised. And, just as the Beatles said it would. It gives birth to a brand new day and a second chance to make everything right that has went wrong. I never knew how profound these moments were or how prolific a song could be until now.
So, to anyone who may be reading this and thinking about how hopeless their life seems, I have only one thing to say: "Here comes the sun...and I say it's all right."
