The child's bedroom is their safe haven, their sanctuary, study and their favorite playground. And as many different functions it serves it will change just as many times while your child grows and finds themselves. With a little bit of planing and a few smart choices when it comes to furniture basics you can have a great, easily changeable room on a budget.
The first thing you will need to look at is furniture. Get your child a bed that is durable and big enough for them to sleep in it up until they move out. So do not get a cute kid's bed, instead go for a Twin mattress size, or a Full (or Double as it is often called) if you have a larger room. Spending some money on this will actually save you a lot more than skimping would, as it will last you a lot longer. If you can implement some type of bed storage this would be great, be it buying one of those beds with built in storage or just storing baskets under the frame. Another must for every child's room is a desk. This will serve for anything from arts and crafts, to homework to endless projects. A dresser, or an adequate closet is also needed. A closet with just a hanger bar does not count, your child will never learn anything about keeping their belongings and room tidy if they don't have a good base for it.
The placement of the furniture should be well thought out too. For instance, you want to try and position the work desk under the window, give them as much natural light as possible! Try to avoid over crowding, if the room is crowded when its brand new imagine how it will be once the child gets in there. Creating, not too obvious, areas of the room dedicated to specific tasks is also a good thing to think about. You want them to have their study area around the desk, of course the very important play area and also a place for resting. I can not tell you how to arrange the furniture as there are such drastic differences in the shapes and sizes of rooms and in people's tastes.
Another must have is a magnetic chalkboard. You do not actually have to buy one of these so its great when it comes to being budget conscious. You can buy magnetic primer and chalkboard paint and create it straight on the wall while incorporating it into the design of the room. Smaller children will benefit from the chalkboard's educational uses and as they grow they can use it for notes, studying and decor.
As far as the color in the room goes, you should buy plain furniture or solid colors that will match the overall color scheme.
