Political commentary: America's shifting political mood

by Peter Lampros

Created on: September 01, 2009

President Obama made history in 2008 when he was the first African-American elected as President of the United States. This historic occasion was brought to a feverish pitch by the news media, who touted Mr. Obama as a "messiah". Many of his constituents had great "hope" and aspirations for the "change" he and his administration promised. Sadly, his promises have fallen short at almost every turn.

Those who held him in such high regard are now feeling somewhat betrayed by his administration, as they remain unnoticed and empty handed, if not forgotten. These were the masses of people who, teary-eyed, claimed that Obama was going to make their house and car payments for them. These people were sold on the whole idea of a welfare state; an idea which is diametrically opposed to everything for which our nation stands. These people are no better off than they were before the election.

Those who saw Mr. Obama as someone who seeks to undermine our nation, with the onset of socialist programs and agendas, while standing up for enemies and adversaries of the United States, have been solidified in their stance as the Obama administration seeks more government control, proposes socialized medicine, nationalizes private sector industries, and weakens our nations foreign policy.

Regardless of one's political affiliation, there is a definitive shift in approval, nationally, of the Obama administration. This, in spite of all the hype created by the media, is fueled by the actions of this administration. He claimed that he would only tax the wealthy, but the tobacco tax alone is evidence of his false claims. Tobacco users are, by and large, middle and lower income people who are addicted and lack the financial resources to utilize programs or medications to quit. Because these individuals are not taxed directly, but indirectly by this administration, they fall through the political "cracks".

The election results, based on empirical observation, would likely yield a far different result if they were polled today. The combination of those who were opposed to Obama's election from the start with those who have become disenchanted over the past eight months would be enough to provide a win for the opposing party. Every president realizes a slide in approval rating from the time of election to the next election, but this president's approval rating has deteriorated at a rate which exceeds those of his predecessors. In merely eight months he has achieved a rating that typically takes a year to two years to achieve.
