Best cures for acne

Acne is defined as a skin disease common in young people, in which small red spots appear on the face and neck (1). This usually occurs during puberty due to an increase in the male sex hormone, which both males and females have. Therefore, it is not just a disorder common in boys.

Spots tend to occur on the face, neck and upper torso, which is where the hair follicle and sebaceous glands are more prevalent. The sebaceous glands become enlarged and sebum production increases (2). This causes the skin to become greasier and leaves pores open for dirt and normal skin flora to enter. This then clogs the pores and ends up causing spots.

Adolescence can be a trying time, what with the hormone and body changes which happen at this time, let alone the arrival of acne. This can cause self esteem problems for youngsters who are trying to discover and assert themselves in their worlds.

To combat spots and help ease the transition through puberty herbal treatments can be a great help. Firstly; good intake of vitamin C will help to boost the immune system as well as kill bacteria ad viruses in the system (3). The body does not store this vitamin so it is essential that we have a regular daily intake.

Secondly; good hygiene will help to keep the skin clean of dirt and bacteria, so washing the affected area twice daily would help to keep dirt and bacteria to a minimum

Thirdly; do not squeeze spots, as this will only increase the likelihood of scars and re-infection

Fourthly; use a herbal ointment. I would recommend a combination of Eucalyptus and Marigold ointment. The Eucalyptus will help to combat all microbes present in the pores and on the skin. Plus it will help to heal the affected area from the inside out, leaving the skin scar free. The marigold will help to keep the skin soft and supple and reduce any inflammation caused by the spots (4).

Lastly; girls should avoid wearing too much foundation cream or powder, as this will add to blocking up the pores and trapping in any dirt or bacteria. If make up is worn it should be removed before bed, allowing the skin time to breathe and any treatments to work.

This not only helps to keep the skin and body healthy, but helps to improve self image and self esteem of the young person concerned, with the added benefit that this treatment does not cost the earth.
