The hope of eternal life

As believers we hope for the promise of eternal life. Hope is a word that means we crave or desire; we have faith and conviction; there is a likelihood or a promise; we have expectations as humans in this hope. In our faith we have been promised by Jesus that he has gone before us to prepare a place in heaven.

Verse John 14:1-3 "Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house there are many dwelling places. If this were not so I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you. And when I have gone and when I have prepared a place for you, I will come again to take you to Myself so that where I am you shall also be. And where I am going you will know the way."

Biblical studies about eternal life reveal that there is an afterlife. Our hope is that our fragile human minds could not fully understand the immense and infinite changes that occur in the afterlife but we believe there is an afterlife. Perhaps this is why specific details have been omitted in the Bible regarding eternal life we simply cannot comprehend all that the afterlife entails.

Psalm 23:4 " Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou are with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me."

Our faith in God shall protect us in our time of death. God will be there with us as we go into the darkness of death. How many people have had near death experiences and told us that they did not want to come back to this life? Yes, they experienced something awesome and beautiful, they were not afraid and they were comforted.

Consider the verses in 1st Corinthians 15:54-57, "And when this perishable has put on imperishability and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall the written word be fulfilled. Death is swallowed up in victory. Death where is your victory? Death where is your sting? The sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

Eternal Life is our promise, our hope and also our faith. God made this promise through his Son, Jesus Christ. If we believe, if we are saved we have no reason to fear death. And this hope in eternal life should have a positive and comforting outcome for all who believe.

Even ancient peoples who were not Christians had a strong belief in an afterlife. All around the globe evidence exists that humans have longed for an afterlife since the dawn of time.

Hope, faith and conviction for an afterlife should impact each believer to do all they can to achieve the grace of God in this life and make this world a better place. Our promise of eternal life is based on our work in this life He has given us. We may be good but we must be better, we may be loving to a few but we must love more. Our God desires to have us with Him, we should also long to be with Him as well.

Psalm 23:6 "Surely goodness and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

Thank God for the promise, the hope everlasting of eternal life.
