The Ultimate Truth
Today, people all over the world are on a quest for meaning and purpose in their lives. Our time on earth is short, maybe seventy or eighty years at best.
However, our lives are filled with a multitude of diversions. As a culture we have become ensnared in the grip of entertainment. Entertainment floods the airwaves unrelentlessly. A prime example of how the multitudes get sucked in is Michael Jackson worship. His death practically incapacitated the throngs of his followers.
People are stuck on their favorite television show and they would come "unglued" if they missed it! Others may choose money and success to fill the void for purpose and meaning. In fact, music, sports, family, or whatever suits a person's fancy has become the "be all to end all" in the search for purpose and meaning in our lives on the road to "the ultimate truth."
Many diversions have taken the place of truly seeking the unvarnished, unadulterated, ultimate truth of the Gospel to guide our lives for now and eternity. As I think about it, a reflective journey of meditation on the Gospel message and the Apostle's letters are in order. We must begin an arduous journey if we are to discover God's purpose and meaning for our lives - the ultimate truth.
What was the main Gospel message to the followers of Jesus? To me, it is threefold. Part one, is believing that Jesus gave us the free gift of grace. He sacrificed his life both physically and spiritually to present us as perfect before the holy Heavenly Father for now and eternity. Part two is the command to love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. As I see it, this takes a lifetime of discovery through Bible reading, meditating on the words of Jesus, and applying them in our lives. Part three is to "love our neighbor as ourselves." This duty is difficult at times, but not impossible, seeing we live in a land where individualism reigns supreme. However, this can be overcome if we love God our Father and his son. We will set aside the notion of individualism, and strive to be others focused in our day to day lives. This will enable us to have love for them through our actions.
Really, we have discovered the "Ultimate Truth" through meditating on Jesus' words and putting them into action.
