How to choose a field hockey stick

Created on: September 01, 2009

How you choose a field hockey stick is dependant on a number of factors. The most important factor when picking the right stick is to consider the weight you are most comfortable with handling. The weight of the hockey stick matters a lot during the game, a light stick is preferred by forward position players as they need to be able to move quickly. A heavy or medium stick is more suitable for defenders who need to use more powerful hits, and defend moves from attackers.

The length of stick will depend upon how tall the player is that will be using the hockey stick. Youth size ranges from 26-28 inches, while adult size and taller players generally use a 38 inch stick. Players usually prefer a long stick, and if they are comfortable with a longer length then that is what they will play with. There are four different toe lengths, a player will choose a toe length according to the position they play on the field.

Shorti

This length of toe has a head wich is all one piece and helps quick movements around the ball.

Midi

The hook and length of the toe are longer on the midi design. This allows for a larger stopping and hitting area, this helps with flicking, receiving, and reverse stick playing.

Hook

The hook toe is the most curved of all the toes, this has the maximum length for hitting and receiving the hockey ball.

A more flexible stick is recommended for beginners, these sticks are more durable than other designs of hockey sticks. More advanced players use a stiffer design for maximum power while hitting the ball. Hockey sticks are manufactured using different types of material.

Fiberglass

This is used as a material on the handle for extra durability. It prevents wear and adds strength to the handle of the hockey stick.

Carbon

This is usually made for the more experienced hockey player, with the carbon reinforcing the strength of the handle. However, the use of this material can cause shock to come from the stick up to the hands in cold weather. The weather conditions should be taken in to account when choosing this stick.

Kevlar

Kevlar adds strength to the handle, and also reduces the vibration of the stick while playing. There is less of a risk of shock to the hands while using a stick with this type of material. Kevlar is used in many types of sporting goods because of its durability, flexibility, and smooth feel while playing.

Dyneema

This is a material which has stiffening and strengthening qualities. It is used at the base of the shaft to absorb the impact of the ball. It is also a strong and durable material.

When considering how to choose a hockey stick, think about the position you will be playing, and the best stick for you will be the one that most fits your playing needs. The correct hockey stick for you isn't necessarily the most expensive, just as the most expensive stick is not always the best. You can buy hockey sticks on line from any reputable sporting company, but it is best to go to a local sports store as you will be able to feel the stick, and find out which one you are more comfortable holding.
