Patterns of rude behavior among American tourists abroad: The 'Ugly Americans'

While customs vary among countries, a startling consensus seems to be the characterization of "rude" Americans. While it seems that this may be due to a few exceptions ruining it for everyone, it is more likely that it is caused merely by ignorance. Travel to foreign places has become so commonplace that few people take the time to research the customs and culture of the countries they plan to visit. Fortunately, the "rude" American stereotype can be avoided.

The first thing that can be done to avoid being stereotyped as rude is to find out about the country ahead of time. Find out about the climate and dress appropriately instead of complaining about their "horrible" weather. Learn about the foods, hand gestures and even what is considered an appropriate greeting. What currency do they use? For example, many Americans are unaware that Canada indeed has its own currency. Whether Americans are unaware of other cultures and customs due to poor schooling or arrogance, it is impossible to say, but a little research is helpful.

Once you do research the culture of the place that you are going to visit, be sure that you can respect their customs comfortably without mocking. Do your best to understand that what is considered rude in the United States may not be considered rude there, or harmless things that are perfectly acceptable here may be completely inappropriate and offensive abroad. For example, if you are a woman and are uncomfortable having to cover your head, you may not want to visit some Middle Eastern countries that consider it a requirement.

Once you have done your research, there are a few things that can be done once you are on vacation. As Americans, we tend to have loud demeanors, which can seem friendly and outgoing to some, but pompous and arrogant to others. Try to be conscientious of others around you, and mirror their tones and volume level. Also, North America tends to be a very laid back continent when it comes to dress, many countries, especially in Europe, find our jean and t-shirt culture sloppy. If you plan on visiting places such as the Vatican City, you may want to follow the cues of locals and dress in nice slacks or a skirt.

While it is unfortunate that Americans have been viewed as rude while abroad, there are ways to change this mode of thinking. It will take time, but it can be cured with an open mind and education. By being conscience of other cultures not only will you eliminate being considered rude, but you will also enjoy your vacation much more.
