We can look at this from a broader sense, because the question really is whether or not professional athletes in general are paid too much. However, this question applies especially to baseball players, because they are the highest-paid athletes in the USA.
Anyway, are baseball players overpaid? In my opinion - no, absolutely not.
In short, you are worth what the market dictates you're worth. Does an MLB player bring more "value" to society than an elementary teacher? In a traditional sense, absolutely not. But am I going to pay to watch a teacher teach a class? No. Am I (and lots of other people like me) going to pay money to watch a baseball player play baseball? Well, as evidenced by the soaring attendance numbers in the MLB, the answer is abundantly clear - yes.
And that's the crux of the matter... MLB players bring in and generate a lot of money... it doesn't really matter who it's coming from, but they're generating money. The owners are paying the players so that they can make money. If they weren't making money, they wouldn't be paid.
Really, it is just simple supply and demand. There are not very many people that have the ability to become professional baseball players. However, there are a lot of people that [in theory] could become teachers, or firefighters, or any other number of valuable positions. It is simple case of supply and demand, which is really the basic idea behind economics. The fewer people that are able to do something, the more they will get paid to do it.
In my opinion, people can be underpaid at times, but I don't believe anyone over be paid too much... again, when looking at supply and demand, you are worth what the market dictates your worth and what people will pay you... in the case of MLB players, that's a lot of money. Whether people like it or not, that's just the way it works and it will probably stay that way for a long time. That is capitalism at its finest.
