Natural treatments for cold and flu

It used to be thought that antibiotics were able to cure all infections and diseases but there are some infections that antibiotics cannot treat, for example, viral infections such as colds, flu and herpes, as well as nose and throat infections. Viral infections are caused by tiny organisms that bring about infection and are spread by coughing and sneezing. Bacteria are spread by touching or shaking other people's hands. There are many manufactured cold and flu remedies on the market. However, there are also just as many natural herbs that have been around for centuries that people use to treat colds. Humans actually managed quite well with them. Here are just a few below.

Turmeric

This natural, age old antibiotic has many medicinal benefits, acting as a tonic and cleanser for the whole system. It has antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric is a remedy for coughs and colds. Mix half a teaspoon of turmeric with 30ml of warm milk. An alternative method is to mix half a teaspoon of turmeric and a pinch of salt in boiling water. Let it cool slightly and gargle with it.

Garlic

Garlic has been known as a cure-all for thousands of years, providing protection against many diseases and helping to fight common infections such as flu, colds and stomach viruses. Garlic contains allicin, which is not only responsible for the classic garlic odour but also the antibacterial properties. A chopped clove mixed with a teaspoon of honey taken three or four times a day, can help to reduce cold and flu symptoms.

Thyme

Thyme is used as an antiseptic and tonic. It is usually combined with other herbs such as licorice and Echinacea. This herb is excellent in the aid of problems affecting the ear, nose and throat, as well as chest conditions, stimulating the clearance of phlegm. It relieves chesty coughs and can help with asthma. To make thyme tea: Add one teaspoon of dried thyme or about four to five fresh thyme sprigs to one to one and a half cups of water and boil for a few minutes, allow to warm, then strain. Serve half a cup and sweeten with honey. Drink thyme tea about four or five times during the day.

Rosemary

Rosemary has been used as a cold and sore throat remedy for many centuries, probably going back as far as ancient Rome and Greece. This herb contains volatile oils that help to stimulate the immune system and increase circulation. Rosemary also helps to detoxify the body and metabolize hormones. Rosemary tea can be made in the same way as thyme
