How to clean a stove top

How to clean a stove top will totally depend on what type of stove you own. Most of us dread this job but it can be made so much easier with a little prevention. A wet cloth placed close to the stove during cooking time will take care of immediate spills as they happen. Sometimes bad spills will happen regardless of how careful you are but cleaning up doesn't have to be a major job. Let's take a look at the ways of cleaning different types of stove tops starting with the easiest first.

Glass stove tops

Glass stove tops have got to be the best thing since sliced bread when it comes to cleaning up spills. Before you start cleaning make sure your stove is unplugged to be safe. If you happen to get a spill on your glass stove during cooking take your wet cloth and wipe it off being careful not to touch the part the burner is on. This part will have to wait until the stove cools down a little but the excess can be cleaned up immediately.

When your stove top has cooled to a desired temperature, place your cloth in some lukewarm water adding a little dish detergent. Wipe the stain with this mixture and small spills should come right off. If you are unfortunate enough to have a larger spill that needs more attention you can soak the spill in hot water and let it sit for at least a few hours. Vinegar and water mixed will produce good results also. If this won't remove the spill some stoves are accompanied by small scrapers when you purchase them that are specifically made for these types of stoves.

Try scraping the spill with the scraper after soaking and this should remove any remains of the spill. There are manufactured products that work well on glass stove tops and are specifically made for the removal of items burnt onto your stove. Once the spill is removed shine your glass top stove and it will look like new. Never use an abrasive cleaner on your glass top stove.

Gas stove tops

Gas stoves are a little trickier but doable when it comes to cleaning. Take off all removable parts of your gas top stove. Any parts that can be removed can be placed in hot water and soaked while you are cleaning the top of the stove. Spray your cleaner of choice onto the top of your stove but avoid spraying the gas jets, you will also be dealing with the pilot light and need to take care not to blow this light out. This light is the fire that lights your burners. Let the cleaner sit for awhile before you start to remove the spill.
