Over time, the happiness of both groups can swing, but right now there is no doubt; liberals are much happier, and they will be much happier well into the future. Conservatives, on the other hand, have their concerns.
Conservatives are anything but happy. They're angry. They're scared. There's a lot of phobia in the conservative community, and you can see it in their leaders. Rush Limbaugh won't hesitate to scream and yell about Barack Obama and how Obama will ruin America. Rush fears Obama's agenda so much, that he hopes that Obama's agenda fails, even though Obama is an elected leader.
Glen Beck says that Obama hates white people, then denies it. Hannity rants nightly about how Obama is taking away the America we all know and love. Fox News has basically turned into a venting outlet for the frustrated right wing. Watch Fox News any night, and anyone can tell conservatives are not happy. Fear may be the best way to describe their mindset.
Fear on the right has led to movements like the "birthers" and "deathers." "Birthers" claim that Obama was born in Kenya, making him ineligible to be president. This is clearly a tactic to remove a president they don't like. Those who are scared of what Obama will do to the US, will do anything to get him out of office, including create crazy conspiracy theories like that.
Another conspiracy theory that tries to discredit Obama is that of the "deathers." Unhappy conservatives who fear reform, claim that Obama's plan will create 'death panels" that will decide whether senior citizens will live or die, a clearly delusional notion. But this scare tactic actually worked, and it slowed progress of a bill and killed some support for reform.
It is clear conservatives are unhappy when they resort to such low tactics. It was clear even during the campaign that there would be mudslinging. Conservatives called Obama a muslim, communist, a socialist, and even a fascist.
Liberals have good reason to be happier about the country and where it's going. Polls clearly show that the younger generation favors gay marriage and is progressive on many issues. Abortion and other issues will shift toward the left in coming years as the younger, more liberal generation makes its mark on the country.
Conservatives know that younger voters are more progressive, and the conservatives are worried that their conservative reign is slipping away. With this shift, it is inevitable that gay marriage will be legalized at some point in the future. Now "radical" ideas like gay marriage will be accepted in the future, just like once considered "radical" ideas, such as abolition of slavery were accepted and even instituted and eventually taken for granted.
Liberals know the country is moving toward where they want it to be. Progressives are now heading toward the majority in America as Baby Boomers fade away. Time will come for a progressive America, and liberals eagerly wait.
