THE WINNERS
The primary winners would be the insurance industry, who would be able to keep their state monopolies, and institute their yearly rate increases. Then there are the pharmaceutical companies who would face little resistance in wiping out the generic drug industry through extended patent rights. Then there is the AMA and its members, who can continue to gouge victims at all levels of need. Republican congressmen and the RNC will probably rejoice in a moral victory, but don't count on a big jump in new members. Investors and research departments, upper management, Ceo's, advertising, television and radio revenue, printing companies, marketing agencies and a number of subcontractors will also be winners. As you can clearly see there are a number of people and companies who will continue to benefit greatly by defeating this health care bill(s). Chances are I missed quite a few others.
THE REASONS
INSURANCE CO's..... It was reported that the ins. co.'s and their lobbyist are spending in excess of $1 million dollars a day on congress and a multi-million dollar media advertising campaign blitz to misinform the public about public option. Their best weapon is fear, and it is an effective tool on people who are confused by the extreme contradictions in the language used by the republicans and democrats in their effort to explain, what in my mind should be a simple bill, but instead is a hard read to decipher and there are three of them (bills) out there, which creates or adds to the confusion. Enter the Fear Factor Crew, they've been at it since reform was first being discussed back in 1963-1965 during the JFK and Johnson administrations, after 44 years they have fine tuned their machine and their message and they have no fear of losing because they have never lost on defeating health care reform. It has been my experience and coupled with my observation skills, that have led me to conclude that it is easier to make a man fear than it is to give him hope or understanding.
The insurance industry and all those involved in providing health care resist reform because they have gotten fat and comfortable with deregulation and the profits that deregulation bestowed upon them. Although change would put an additional 44-50 million people at their disposal, reform is still too big of a financial risk to them in terms of profit and bonuses paid, they have gotten used to the idea that they are in charge of one's heath care, and what type of care to deny and to whom, they have taken control of physicians and their ability to offer the best care they can. Actually as I write this, the idea that they probably most fear, is losing total control over the process, which would affect their bottom line.
