Single payer health system: Pros and cons

by Kelly Greenbaum

Created on: August 30, 2009

It is interesting to note that many people do not understand the single payer health care system. A single payer health care system is a completely government run health care system. Similar government assisted programs thrive in all of the other industrialized nations. They pay half the cost that we do and receive better care.

There are many advantages to having a single payer system. Everyone would be insured. This would mean no more costly emergency visits for non-emergencies. People will be able to simply go to their primary care physician. This would also mean no pre-existing clauses that currently exclude millions of Americans from receiving health care when they might have the greatest need. Preventative care would become more attainable and society as a whole would be much healthier. Many diseases and illnesses could be controlled or prevented. Scores of people with no health care simply don't get the medical attention they need because they can't afford to. Having a single payer system would also mean a savings on the medications we take. Our pharmaceutical companies charge Americans three times, (sometimes more), then our European counterparts.

With most of the waste, greed, and corruption out of the health care system, health care costs would be more in line with those of other industrialized nations. These are the same nations whose dollar surpasses ours and have a better educational system. They also get six to eight weeks of paid vacation and work thirty-five hour work weeks. These countries are also healthier than us. Americans are dying because of their poor diets and lack of exercise. And it's not all our fault. When you look at how are society functions it makes sense.

Americans put an emphasis on being busy. Some of us work multiple jobs, with the average American only getting eight days off a year. Not to mention we typically commute to work. In Europe they walk and ride bikes because everything is closer together but American's don't live like that. Our vastness as a country, helped along by the motor city, has made us a country that commutes. We commute to work, to our children's schools, special events, and our doctors.

If it's easy it's for us. Why you can do just about anything from your vehicle in this great land of ours. You can pick up your laundry, prescriptions, and food and never have to leave your nice comfy cozy truck or car seat. If you're too busy to pick up food you can now have it delivered on-line from a store right
