How to decorate a small bathroom

Created on: August 30, 2009

Decorating small spaces, especially bathrooms, can be a challenge. Bathrooms should be clean rooms that incorporate simple design so as to allow for a clutter-free and relaxing environment. Follow the tips below to capture a fantastic dcor for your small bathroom.

Powder rooms, master bathrooms, main full bathrooms - they call all fall into the "small" category. These rooms don't have to feel small, though. Take your time and put some thought into decorating your small bathroom. Come up with a main goal, like "clean, simple lines" or "bright and airy" that you want to accomplish for the room.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

One of the most important things to keep in mind when decorating small bathrooms is to keep it simple. Putting too much stuff into a small room will make it seem crowded. If you have a lot of toiletries to put into your small bathroom, get one piece of furniture that can act as storage. This can be a cupboard that hangs on the wall, a small vanity, or a small chest of drawers. Medicine cabinets are great for small bathrooms because they are built into the wall and can be covered by a mirror. It stores essentials and provides a faade!

KEEP IT CONSISTENT

Use the same types of fixtures throughout the bathroom to keep a consistent style in tact. If you have a chrome faucet, use chrome everywhere else, like the showerhead, towel bars, and toilet paper holder. If you incorporate too many textures, it may seem eclectic and "all over the place."

KEEP IT COLORFUL

Bright colors work great in small rooms - like yellow, white, aqua, or a light neutral shade - but do not be afraid to use dark colors in small rooms. Deep shades of brown, blue, or gray can give the illusion of depth (like when you are in a room that is pitch black and you sense that objects are farther away from you than they actually are) and provide a rich boldness to express your personality. These dark colors could especially be used if there is a window in the bathroom to provide an extra dose of light. Darks and lights balance each other out nicely!

KEEP IT TO A MINIMUM

If you would like to hang some art on the wall of your small bathroom, by all means, do it! Use just one medium or large piece of art to fill the space, though, because a lot of small pieces will add more clutter. Too much stuff causes a feeling of claustrophobia, which you nor your guests want to experience!

KEEP IT ELEGANT

To add a touch of elegance to your small room, put in some mood lighting or candles, if there is surface space.

When decorating any room, remember to portray your personality and charm, and use items and colors that you love. This, plus having a strategy and/or goal, will provide consistency and character to your home!
