When you are renovating a historical home, you have to be very aware of several things that can effect the historical value of your home and ways to get money to do the renovations. If your home is already or you want it to be on the register of historical places, then you have to be informed as to the requirements, limitations, and resources to help you stay within these boundaries. The first things to be aware of are the laws that surround the ability to register your house. For your house to be historically accurate, it has to retain as much as possible the original condition, paint, appearance and interior construction elements that were originally there. There is understanding that some changes will have to be made for electricity, plumbing, and current amenities, but overall you have to stay within governmental guidelines.
If you are willing to put the time, money, and effort into keeping your home historically accurate, one of the best decisions you can make is to hire an individual who specializes in the area of historical home renovation to come out and look at the house. These people can assess what needs to be done to bring the house into compliance with the Federal code for historical homes and the best way to approach the project. These individuals will often work with a team that comprises people in construction, interior decoration, and even, at times, historians who can do research on the home's history. You can do some of this work yourself by trying to discover the story behind your own residence using the local library, old newspapers from the period in which it was built, family history (if available) and careful examination of your home for any signs or clues that will help you in your quest. This will greatly help the people you bring in to aid you in the renovation of the home.
Another aspect to consider here is to educate yourself on the grants and various monies payable to those who are trying to refurbish a historical home. There are grants called "block grants" that help you to finance your venture that are given by the Federal government. This entails a neighborhood block to get together and decides to fix up the homes and improve the overall appearance of that street. There is a paperwork process that you have to go through in order to apply for the grant that the effort is well worth the time and the funds may possibly receive. Also, there are a variety of organizations that can aid you in getting information, grants, and aid
