Every year, for one day only, everyone gets a chance to be Irish. No matter what their background on 17th of March they can still get kitted out in a green leprechaun suit and sprinkle clovers over others. On Saint Patrick's Day you've an excuse to put on you're culchie thick Irish bogger accent, which often sounds nothing like a real Irish person, and order pints in your local Irish bar.
For the Irish, myself included, Paddy's Day is an excuse to go into town with all your friends, dress up like an eijit, get your face painted (my favorite bit) and jump into a random parade with no one giving out! It really is a good laugh. Paddy's Day has an effect on everyone, it makes us light hearted and happy for the day. You see little kids with big smiles running around your village from older kids dressed as snakes and St.Patrick or hunting in your local park for lucky four leafed clovers so they can guarantee themselves a good time.
No matter what your age, young or old, you should have good craic on this festive Irish day and enjoy the atmosphere whether you're in a small Irish town or a huge city in America. This is a festival for all. It spread out from Ireland to the rest of the world and should be enjoyed by the rest of the world not just Ireland. Every person should dig deep inside themselves for this day and bring out their inner Irish soul!
Saint Patrick brought us Christianity from over the ocean. He gave us our main religion. He also banished snakes (although I'm not sure how many Irish people believe that because I don't think I do)! He was a strong, level headed boy who grew up to be a wise man. He knew what he had to do and he did it. He came back to Ireland even though he had escaped from ,well, slavery, I suppose. He was tremendously brave and full of courage.
So on the 17th of March, let's all go out, Irish or not,and have a blast. Have a day full of Irish joy. Look for the leprechauns, take their gold, make a wish in a holy well, find a four leafed clover and claim good luck for ever, dress-up as the man himself, jump into a random parade, buy a green milkshake and most importantly of all - just enjoy this funny day!
