People choose their birth control method based on effectiveness and ease of use. The point of using birth control is to prevent pregnancy. So when choosing a birth control method, we want to find the most effective one available. We also want something that will be easy for us to use. The top birth control methods combine these factors.
Birth Control Pills
Birth control pills are effective if they are used correctly. The pill should be taken once daily at approximately the same time each day. If you are forgetful, then the birth control pill is not going to be a good choice for you.
There are several pill options available. Discuss your health and sexual activity with your doctor. Be honest, so that you and your doctor can find the birth control pill that is right for you.
Birth Control Shot
Depo-Provera is a shot that is given every three months. This is a good choice for those that are forgetful. According to Planned Parenthood, less than 1 out of 100 women will get pregnant each year if they always use the birth control shot as directed. Discuss the pros and cons of the shot with your physician to see if this is the right choice for you.
Condoms
Condoms can be purchased at your local pharmacy. There are condoms available for both men and women. Condoms are not as effective as most of the other birth control methods, but they are easy to get and easy to use. Using a condom also helps reduce the risk of getting a sexually transmitted disease(STD). They can be used with other birth control methods to almost eliminate the chance of pregnancy.
Abstinence
Abstinence is the only way to ensure that you can not get pregnant. Refraining from sexual activity eliminates the chance of pregnancy or the chance of contracting a sexually transmitted disease. So it is obviously the most effective birth control method.
Birth Control Implant
The implant is placed under the skin of your arm. This method of birth control lasts for three years. The hormones released into your body prevent the release of eggs. If you decide you want to get pregnant, the implant can be removed.
Discuss the available birth control methods openly and honestly with your partner. If you each decide to use one method of birth control, this reduces your chances of an unplanned pregnancy. Ask your partner to tag along on your visit to your doctor. This way you can both hear the information and make an informed decision on the best birth control method.
