A Friendly Smile

He looked so sad sitting there
she couldn't help but stare
There he was all alone
Having no friends to call his own
She caught his gaze and held it for awhile
Giving him a friendly smile
The smile he returned to her with gladness
but she noticed in his eyes there was sadness
She wished she could talk to him
To find out why his eyes seemed so dim
He saw her coming his way

Wishing he knew just what to say
And now he sat across from her
Looking deep into eyes that were more friendly that he though they were
As they sat and talked to each other
Both wanting to get to know one another
She forgot to ask him
Why his eyes had seemed so dim

Their friendship grew
until loved blossomed anew
She decided to ask him
About that long ago day they had met, why his eyes had seemed so dim
He took her hands in his and looked deep into her eyes
When he answered her question she began to cry
He told her before they met he had not a friend
His life, he had planned to end
Thinking no one cared
Until, on that fateful day, a friendly smile was shared
As he had looked into her smiling eyes, he'd seen something he had never seen before
And deep down he knew he'd wanted more
In her eyes he'd seen a friendly light
and he'd held onto it with all his might
He no longer wanted to die
Because in her eyes
He had seen a true friends gaze
That in his lonely heart, had been a haze

Now, as they held each other close
In her eyes he saw the look he loved most
The one that had saved him
From giving into the feelings that had made his eyes dim
She was now even more glad for that special day
That had changed their lives in every way
For he had found a true friend
that he knew would stick by him until the end
and they had a love that was strong
One that would last so long
Longer than forever
Because they would always be together
No matter the cost
or what could be lost
They'd walk hand in hand
over any land
Side bye side - mile by mile
And just to think, this all started with a friendly smile
