Manga reviews: Love Hina

by Shane Ostrom

Created on: August 29, 2009

Love Hina is one of the best mangas I have ever read. The characters are so loveable and exciting and grow up over a period of ten years. It is absolutely amazing. The story starts off with two children playing. The young boy (who grows up to be the main character, Keitaro) makes a promise to the girl to go to Tokyo University with her because legend says that if two people who love each other go to Tokyo U, they will live happily ever after.

Sadly the young boy grows up to be a loser who gets kicked out of the house by his parents. He can't get into school or get a job so he turns to his grandma to take residence in her dorm, the Hinita inn, which happens to be an all girls dorm! Nether less he takes residence and is rejected by the other girls, but over time grows to be a very popular person as the girls do anything to get him!

The characters at the house are very different and creative which keeps the series interesting. There is Shinobu, the wimpy and whiny girl that grows so much over the series; it makes her one of the best characters in the book, Kitsune, the girl that likes to get drunk, gamble, etc., Su, the immature yet brilliant girl who never grows up, Naru, the most important average girl who Keitaro ends up falling in love with, and Motoko the strange warrior girl that constantly trains in sword fighting.

The characters change significantly, especially Shinobu, making the book one of the most unique romantic comedies out there. Although Keitaro makes ridicules mistakes, usually making himself look like a fool by accidentally seeing the girls nude, or along those lines, causing him to usually be punched to the next dimension, the story has a very deep, significant meaning.

The last book answers the questions that you've been wondering that has built in suspense from the very beginning. The book seems unlikely, yet very, very possible in the real world. The shift in attitude between the characters, the good and the bad times, makes the book interesting constantly.

Overall I think this series is the best story-line in the manga industry, even though it's only a mere four-teen books long. The epilogue after the book is very amazing for it shows the conclusion of the story years later. The book almost starts itself over, which is amazing, impossibly hard to explain. I think everyone over the age of thirteen should read the series.
