Poetry: Nightmares

While deep in sleep I drift into a dream,
where cast into the vast and vexing void,
I hear within a howling wind, a scream,
that fills my mind with visions paranoid.

No light shines through the blackness of this pit;
a single scream is now a chorus sung.
Ferocious now the fear I can't admit,
each breath pulls acrid air within my lung.

Two orbs of red then in the darkness glow
while fumes of sulfur fill the dampened air.
The orbs of red now ride a river flow,
Charon upon his ferry waiting there.

The river Acheron awaits my fate,
my wicked soul will 'cross to distant shore.
The ferryman Charon before the gate;
the chorus now becomes a screaming roar.

"Your soul is damned eternally for sin!"
the graveled voiced ferryman now bellows loud.
"Upon this boat I take you deep within,
for punishment the Master has avowed."

I drop down to my knees upon the sand,
and cry out from my soul "Relieve this blight."
The ferryman now reaches out his hand,
while I wake up still screaming in the night.

    A Mother's Nightmare
