Political commentary: America's shifting political mood

Mood swings, with respect to politics, is merely based on satisfactory results associated with an elected official. Successful implementation of an official's ideas and reforms can be a timely and costly process, which in most cases, the American people have no patience for. Once a President is elected into office, Americans want swift and life-changing results.

A man or woman would need a magic wand and the power behind it to please all the people all the time. What one feels today can easily be altered by the media simply because the media has the power to change the minds of people.

Try to imagine the daily grind that a President must endure and see how quickly they age after election, not to mention coming off of a long campaign trail. As one sits at their desk facing monthly bills, college tuition and unpaid real estate taxes, multiply the anxiety umpteen times to even closely imagine what the President must be going through. We are one of the most compassionate nations and yet our opinions and emotions can change instantly after watching the nightly news.

Perhaps our economical plight is largely due to our own high expectations of lifestyles and the inability to sometimes just do without. Sacrifice is needed now in a broader sense and supporting our President, although one might not always see the silver lining, is the most democratic way to view the White House.

One sees only what the media sees, unless closely knit to the White House staff and transparency, despite pre-election promises, is only that, simply because we are always on a "need-to-know" basis when it comes to reform.

"What is my Government doing for me today?" Government employees have health care, pensions, every holiday on the calendar off, good work environments, all up to OSHA standards. What does the average American have? Struggling companies dropping health care packages, taking away vacations, dropping wages to keep employees working and cutting back hours, are the norm in this volatile economy.

One looks at the United States government as a separate entity at times, feeling alienated and segregated from the ivory tower built and paid for by the people who are now living in the land of the "have nots".

"Working the System" has been a popular expressions for decades. What type of funding is there for the middle class man out of work, collecting too much unemployment to qualify for public welfare and yet, he is still expected to survive on less than half his previous wage. With hiring freezes on, finding a new job has become a bigger-than-life challenge.

Sometimes the system just doesn't have anything to offer unless one decides to give up and go on Welfare. However, as a ship on the ocean, the strong and the brave who are now keeping this economy afloat, will continue to dream of a better day when the captain at the helm and his loyal crew, sail out of the dismal fog.
