My recent obsession is Project Runway. With the exception of All My Children, I almost never watch TV, especially reality TV. But I happened to catch an episode of Project Runway one day about two months ago, and I was immediately hooked.
I like this show so much I even have dreams that I am one of the designers and that my clothes are being showcased on the runway. As I watched the season finale yesterday, it finally hit me why I like this show so much. The designers have such a passion for what they do and they use clothing to express themselves, their perspectives, and to tell stories. I never really thought about telling a story through clothing, but now I see how it's possible.
I always thought that my love for shopping and new, stylish clothes was the shallow, superficial side of me. But I am beginning to see that it goes much deeper than wanting to look good. What I wear makes a statement about who I am. When I like the way I look, I feel good about who I am. The way someone dresses sends a message to the world about who they are. Of course, it's not the whole story (in fact it's just a small piece) but I do think someone's choice of clothing, particularly a woman's choice of clothing, makes a statement about who she is.
For work, I like clothing that is professional, but also indicates that I am youthful and like to have fun with my wardrobe. I like big earrings, form-fitted cuts, and sleek materials like silk and nylon. I love wearing dresses to work. For going out, I like to wear clothes that are sexy while also being classy. I love tops with spaghetti straps, black pants and noticeably jewelry.
My favorite stores to shop for clothing are Bebe, GUESS, Kenneth Cole, Armani Exchange, and the Victoria's Secret Catalogue.
Laura, one of the designers on Project Runway, said something to the effect of how she wanted to send the message to women to take a few extra minutes each day to really take care of yourself and pamper yourself. Through fashion, you can make life just a little more exciting and you can communicate something to the world.
After watching the season finale, I was really inspired to create something. So I played the piano for awhile with a renewed sense of purpose.
