Socialism is based on a fantasy that everyone can be equal. The problem is, most people want to make themselves better than they are. Socialism discourages that philosophy. Some of the biggest advocates of socialism are those who believe everyone but themselves are supposed to be equal.
It reminds me of the movie about Howard Hughes. When he went to Connecticut to visit Katheryn Hepburn's family, her mom said she wasn't concerned about money. Howard told her that she already had a lot of money so no wonder she didn't care about money.
Take Obama and many of the people he surrounds himself with. They support socialism as long as they don't have to share in the misery with most Americans. If Obama and the Democrats increase taxes as much as they will have to in order to pay for the Obama programs, most people will be equal because most will be poor and miserable. The ones who won't be poor are those who exempt themselves from socialism or are financially able to withstand the economic blow.
In socialistic nations, either prices and wages are kept artificially low, except for those who are in the ruling class or the taxes are so high in order to pay for the social programs, that most people can't become rich. Capitalism helped build this nation into the greatest in the world because capitalism has incentives for people to become successful.
Socialism with its goal of making people equal, punishes those who are too successful and gives to those who are considered unequal. Socialism destroys incentive. That is why the Soviet Union often employed two or three people to do the work of one person. No one wanted to work harder than he was required to work.
Capitalism rewards hard work and those who push themselves, receive the rewards they deserve. If 80 hours of work a week earns someone the same amount of money as he would receive if he worked 40, why would he want to work 80 hours? Taxes make socialism function.
If you're going to work hard to earn a lot of money and then the government slaps you with higher taxes, it doesn't make sense to kill yourself if the extra money means extra money for Washington and not yourself.
Socialism only works if everyone is truly equal and believes in hard work. The first century Christians were socialists because they had everything common. If they earned a total of $100,000, they would put all the money together and distribute it to those who needed it.
The rich didn't care if their money went to the poor and they had to live on
