My favorite classic car has always been the 1969 Mustang Mach One. It, to me, is the best looking car I've ever seen. If I'm driving down the street or highway and see one, I'll follow it for a while and just stare at it as I drive along. If I see one parked it will claim several minutes of my time as my eyes enjoy its allure.
The Mustang Boss 429 is one of the rarest and most sought after muscle cars, anywhere. It has recently brought bids at Barrett-Jackson auto auctions of over $350,000
I prefer the Boss 429 version of the Mach One. The Boss package included: a 429 cid engine, a four-speed manual transmission and a limited slip 3.91:1 rear axle. The Boss came in five colors; Black Jade, Wimbledon White, Royal Maroon, Candyapple Red and my favorite, Raven Black.
Due to NASCAR'S rules of homologation, a production run of 500 civilian cars using the 429 Boss engine would need to be qualified by Ford, on the streets. The Gran Torino, which used the 429 Boss motor in NASCAR's Grand National Division, was not chosen to be the recipient. The 1969 fastback Mach One body style was chosen instead.
Some modifications were made to the Mach One's engine compartment to accomodate the 429 big block motor. Widened shock towers, "chopped" front suspension mounts and a redesign of the inner fender walls made the engine installation possible. Consequently, no air conditioning or automatic transmission were available, these items were omitted to scavenge more room for the engine.
The overall look of the car reminds me of a sprinter in the blocks, tensed forward slightly, in anticipation of the crack of the starter's pistol. The car's muscular stance is enhanced by the beefy F60 x 15 tires, wider front track, hood scoop and rear spoiler. The Magnum 500 wheels add that final touch, like the right shoes to complement a beautiful woman's evening ensemble.
Ford listed the Boss at 375 hp in 1969 to help counter rising auto insurance costs of the times for high output muscle cars. The actual horsepower output was in the 500 to 525 hp range. Power steering, power front disc brakes, an 8000 rpm tachometer and an upgraded Mustang interior were standard equipment.
The boss has a clean look to it, with no distracting, over the top stripe kits seen on other Mach Ones. The only decals seen on the Boss were on the front fenders, behind the wheels, saying simply - BOSS 429. The Boss, to me, epitomizes raw power. You can enjoy the smells of the hi-test gas it drinks, its leather interior and the ample rubber that meets the asphalt. It's a simple elemental beast compared to today's cars, a throw back to a time when cars were easier to work on.
