Depo-Provera: The worst type of birth control out there

Ahh, conveinience. But at what cost? Depo-Provera is marketed toward women as being the easiest birth control method out there. Sure; you just visit the doctor once every three months and get a shot in the butt, pretty easy right? But Depo-Provera fails to mention the extreme side-effects that come along with this so-called easy birth control method.

1. Weight gain.

So, this one may not be really detrimental to your health, but what woman out there would like to put on 20, 30, or even more pounds due to a side effect to Depo? Depo-Provera causes weight gain in 70% of its recipients. Personally, I gained about 35 pounds in the nine months that I was on Depo, and it's not coming off very easily now either. Also, I was always hungry. It didn't matter if I had just eaten a big meal, I wanted all the sweets I could find.

2. Calcium deficiency

It's a mystery as to why this happens, but its likely that the very high levels of hormone in Depo-Provera cause your bones to purge their levels of calcium in order to metabolize the hormones. This causes women to lose a large part of their bone calcium mass. Ask any doctor, and they will tell you that you must take a calcium supplement while on Depo. This is very dangerous to women because women are already much more likely to get osteoporosis. If they lose much of their bone density to Depo, how much will they be left with? It's unsure, but I don't want to take that risk anymore!

3. Mood Changes

Granted, any hormone added to your body may change your moods, but Depo was outrageous. I'm normally very stable in mood, but on Depo - look out! I was constantly at edge and was on a rollercoaster of moods. Not fun for me or anyone around me.not

So what's there to do? Ladies, there are plenty of other options out there. Try taking the daily pill. Use your cell phone as an alarm to remind you. Make it part of your daily routine. If taking a daily pill is difficult for you, ask your doctor about the patch or the ring. With so many brands of birth control methods out there, there has to be something that will work for you. Depo should never be an option. It is unsafe and not worth the conveinience.
