What is the purpose of meditation?

Meditation has a purpose in our human lives as we go about our day to day activities. The purpose for meditation has many meanings to different types of people, and different religions. Somewhere within those meanings a purpose for all can be found. Meditation by definition is someone who practices. The purpose of meditation lies in our ability to focus upon our thoughts and to release our thinking minds. The truth is that meditation is an art of relaxation, and rest by allowing our minds to be calm and not think.

Thinking often times will allow us to create more problems for ourselves. Meditation is taking a break from life's chaos and releasing our cares, stress, and thoughts. As Eckhart Tolle has stated we usually believe that we control our minds, but in fact it is our minds which are in control of us. With the art and practice of meditation we can allow our mind the release it needs, and we will then find out that we can control our minds. Honestly there is more of a purpose to meditation than this mind control game. We just need to look deeper into the uses and practices of many who meditate.

Meditation is often used as a source of relaxation, and becoming calm in our thoughts, minds and lives. The result of meditation can be lowering of the blood pressure, more conscious thoughts, providing a focus for our lives, becoming a calmer person, prayer, and communion with a higher power often called God. If we look at the ways in which meditation is used then you will find many other purposes that I have not listed in this article.

Meditation can be as simple as following your breath into the lungs and out of the lungs. Do that right now. Close your eyes, and focus your attention on your breath. Breathe in slowly, follow it's path down to your lungs, and then slowly breathe out, and follow its path back out of your mouth. How do you feel? Hopefully you feel a bit calmer. Now imagine doing that for 5 minutes, 10 minutes or even 20 minutes a day. I firmly believe that you will find the purpose of meditation within those first few breaths.

Meditation is about calming the mind, and refocusing your energy. What better purpose than that? The other purposes of meditation are the ability to commune with a higher power, alleviate your stress, guide and focus your life with a better understanding. Within this understanding comes a life full of purpose, value, faith, hope and love. Meditation is taking the time to relate to yourself, and to a higher power. Leave your stresses behind, and breathe into meditation.
