Tips for preparing in the event of emergencies and natural disasters

When faced with a natural disaster the primary key is preparing ahead of time. There are dozens of potential dangers that you can be faced with at any given time. We live in a time period where the scene of the world is constantly changing. Being alert to your surroundings and prepared can make the difference in successfully surviving a catastrophe. Relying on your natural intuitions if your gut feeling tells you that a place is not safe by all means remove yourself from that area. In this age of technology we are fortunate to have at our finger tips news warnings and cell phone communication to alert us of impending dangers, one of the best means of protection is to head warnings. We are quick to head warning labels written by manufactures and consumer reports but often times we procrastinate when it comes to preparing for the survival of our lives. I know many people may put off stock piling and securing their homes with essential safety kits because of feeling that they have time or that a natural disaster will never happen to them. There are many things that you should look out for when preparing for a natural disaster, if you have children are they prepared? Are you on medication do you have allergies? If you are on medications have all your medications easily accessible along with contact numbers for your doctors. It is also important to have contact numbers given to your employer or religious leaders or some other responsible person that you trust, so that they can get in contact with your relatives or so that they are able to account for you in case you have to evacuate an area in a hurry. Just like having fire drills and knowing where your point of contact will be everyone in your family should establish several meeting points 1) some place not to far from the city maybe the next city away 2) some place inside the state boarders 3) a place to stay outside of state be it a relatives house or a close friend that will account for you, it all depends on the degree of the disaster and the restrictions that the civil authorities may place on the disaster zone. It important to be organized before a situation presents itself in order to minimize the chaos that is sure to ensue during a natural disaster. Emotions run high and your natural instinct to survive kicks in. You should also work up some sort of will or medical directive in an unfortunate event that you are injured or have minor children that must be cared for in your absence. Keep on stock non-perishable foods those with easy pop cans, batteries sealed in plastic bags, a crank radio, water proof matches, candles, enough water to last 5 days, enough food to last every individual in your family, a collapsible shovel and potassium iodide pills. Foods that are high in protein that will give you energy to keep on the move. Each member of your family should have a backpack with food supplies and personal items. It is good to have at least 100 bucks and 50 bucks per extra person in ones just in case ATM's are not working. It has also been suggested to bury a safe with such things as your house deed, home insurance policy and a small supply of money in your backyard for safe keeping. Everyone knows to pack a flash light in your kit but investing in a small flash light on your key chain or one that fits in your purse is also wise. You may be trapped in a building or on public transportation when disaster strikes. Again when in public places it is good to always be mindful of your surrounding and of any suspicious activities or people. Other essentials may be to have a mask, bleach or disinfectant, latex gloves, blankets, hiking boots or sneakers, sanitary products and dry ice.
