Understanding the problems shift workers face

by Vic Ryan Agot

Created on: August 26, 2009

Good Friday; half a year on the night shift and counting..

When I was still with my previous account, I had a strong distaste for the night shift. Since it was a 24/7 support, I got the luxury to prefer a day schedule. Working at night means sleeping at day; sleep while most people make the most out of their lives; work while people are tucked in beds and friends are having a night-out. They say working at night entails higher pay but it's never worth the bargain for me. I needed to cover the windows, like Dracula, because the light of day was too glaring for the eyes to sleep. Aircon was needed; otherwise, I'd be like a strip of bacon in the oven. Waking up was worse than going to sleep; no matter how many hours you have slept, you'll still end up waking with a heavy head. I miss the news, the primetimes shows; I miss CSI, Prison Break and especially 24!

Having to come to work was the worst. I often dragged my cranky self to my desk and hoped nobody would piss me off or else all hell would have really broken loose, hehehe! My mind usually hibernated at night therefore concentration was all but a challenge. When I was met with technical or process questions, my mind tried to sober up a bit but when the hands of time reached 3am, drowsiness kicked in again... this time with a vengeance. I called it the 3am syndrome before. If we didn't have training, some would just go to the back of the Training Department and doze off. I'd just bow my head(seminary technique) and gave in to the craving 'til training was requested; breaks and lunch were spent sleeping like I never slept at day(oh boy did I sleep?).

When I transferred to Kodak, life has gone a little bit different. Tech Support only operates at 9am-8pm EST; so daytime in US, nigh time in the Philippines and working at day is close to impossibility. I used to drink coffee to perk me up but it's never a good friend of hyperacidity. Questions are the ones keeping me up all night; seldom do I feel sleepy even if I'm just glued in my station. I'm happy that we moved to Synergis building because our monitors have gone LCD so the glare doesn't strain much our eyes as the CRT ones would. I spend a good laugh with the agents and other officers most of the time so I'm stretching the muscles of my mouth somehow. Kodak Team has been one of the best team I've ever been into so far. Most of the time, a man is not really just wanting something to do for a living; he wants to be in a workplace that he considers a home next
