My husband and I realized years ago that we would never have a child the "conventional" way and we played around with the idea of adoption but we never really did anything about it. We also knew that we could not afford a private, or overseas adoption, they can run to the tens - of - thousands of dollars, not something we have sitting around waiting to be used.
We ended up going through the local Department of Children and Families. There are so many children in this country up for adoption we realized we could help close to home.
We waitied about a year and at a local adoption event my husband saw a picture of a beautiful 4-year old little girl and we immediately told DCF that we were interested in making this little girl our own.
Three months later, after we had all but forgot about our interest we received a call that we were the family chosen to adopt this beautiful child. Surprisingly, unlike many of the children available from the state, she had no disabilities, no drug exposure. She moved in within a month and was calling us mommy and daddy well before Christmas.
She only lived with us for about four months before we went to probate court and her adoption was final. She is now all ours, and she is a joy (for the most part, she is five). We are looking to adopt another child to give her a brother or sister of her own.
