COBBLESTONES
As I stumble along the cobblestones of life
And struggle with the suffering and strife
I try to choose the smoothest path
And avoid the streets of hate and wrath
I carefully skirt around the stones
That lead to hurtful, unfair zones
To avoid the path of self-righteousness,
Selfishness, insolence, and wont to impress
As I search out the more even stones
That have no harmful undertones
My gait more steady and my balance true
I am confident I can make it through
If I stay the straight and narrow course
My chances curtailed to suffer remorse
My eyes wide open to obstacles hidden
To avoid the dangers of things forbidden
I know that no matter how careful I prove
How much I ponder, observe, and behoove
I'll have to deal with some storms of living
With doubt, oppression and some misgiving
But if I'm true to my chosen way
If I practice obduracy every day
To all the evils that do pertain
All my efforts will not be in vain

Finding the mettle.
I need to find my happy bone,

Alone
But with friends
I have had no friends
