When we meet new people, we often form an immediate opinion of them. Positive or negative, this opinion sticks with us. Even if we later learn that this first assessment had no basis, we find it hard to shake.
Judging is human nature. We have standards of conduct in which we were raised, or that we have acquired or learned throughout the years. It is natural for us to want to surround ourselves with people we believe are like us, sharing the same beliefs and tastes. But when our judgments become an obstacle, it is time to understand that this part of our human nature needs to be subjected to the truth of God's word.
Judgment belongs to God. Judging is the cognitive process of reaching a decision or drawing conclusions; judgment the act of judging or assessing a person or situation or event or the capacity to assess situations or circumstances shrewdly and to draw sound conclusions. Because God is Sovereign, judgment belongs to Him.
Do not show partiality in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be afraid of any man, for judgment belongs to God (Duet 1:17). Consider carefully what you do, because you are not judging for man but for the LORD, who is with you whenever you give a verdict. Now let the fear of the LORD be upon you. Judge carefully, for with the LORD our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery. (2 Chron 19:6)
As Christians, we are told to Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment. (John 7:24) and Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. (Proverbs 31:19). We are cautioned, Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you (Matt 7:1-2).
Jesus told the disciples By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me (John 5:30)
In daily life, Christians are the light of the world. A candle, when lit, gives light freely in the dark room, and does not decide if one set of eyes is better than another. This is the same for us. Only God knows the heart of a man, the depths and intentions of his soul. We do not choose whom we shine our light upon as we walk through life. It is a gift we freely give to others.
