Small carpentry projects for your home

by Luke Bawden

Created on: August 25, 2009

Carpentry may start off as a small project but will very often lead to a cherished hobby. There is a real amazing feeling as you gaze in wonder at something you helped to create. The starting point is looking at the fun you can have and the cost effective difference you can generate. Depending on your entry level you might want to take a short course or get a tradie round and pay close attention.

So select a project where your raw ambition can flourish. It might be a deck out the back or a playhouse for the ankle biters or a kitchen table. Where is heaven on earth for the home handy person, the hardware shop of course. The correct tools for the job are important wether you're changing the spark-plugs, sewing on some new buttons or making a great margarita. Here's a good starters kit, 20 oz hammer, tape measure, combination square, medium chisel, square end pliers (nail nippers), builders apron, spirit level and nail punches. Power tools are a must because they add allot so an electric planner, compound mitre saw and nail guns good value

Start by making yourself a couple of saw stools as there is allot of learning to be had here. When learning it is often easier to copy something else. You might want to make an easel for the kids to paint on so find a premo model and add you touch. A big part of any construction is accurate measuring and marking out. So have your pencil sharp and make sure you're comfortable when you're cutting stuff.

Another facet of building is working with a wood lathe. You can make many different things from salad bowls to fancy decretive creations for lattice work and the likes. You might decide to get some builder round to add a room onto the house and work with them on the project. Most of the applications from the building trade when implemented soundly give great affect.

There is something wildly special about creating stuff. When your friends gaze upon some gem of creativity and realise it's yours the sense of achievement is spot on. You drive past your old house and there are more people utilising that deck you put so much into. Photos of the play house you thought at the time would turn you grey. A table that has shared a thousand graces.
