The beginnings of the US Coast Guard Day can be traced back to the United States Revenue Cutter Service which was started by Alexander Hamilton under the auspices of the Treasury Department, on August 4 1790. The building of a fleet of 10 cutters was authorized by Congress and would be responsible for enforcing the tariff laws under the constitution. This somewhat simple plan at the time was the beginnings of the powerful Coast Guard as we know it today.
In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the Lifesaving Service and the named changed to Coast Guard. Subsequently in 1939 the Lighthouse Service became part of the Coast Guard as did the Bureau of Navigation and Steamboat in 1939 and 1946 respectively. Between 1790 and 1798, the Cutters, now the present day Coast Guards, filled the gap in the absence of the United States navy, and were solely responsible for protecting US maritime interests.
Since its inception, the Coast Guard has been involved in cracking down on piracy and enforcing the collection of taxes. It operates as part of the Navy in wartime and has so far been involved in several wars. The American Civil War and the Mexican American war are just some of the wars that utilized their skills.
The Mission of the Coast Guard includes protection of the environment and the public. They protect the security and economic interest of the Unites States including coasts, ports and international waters. With a large fleet of patrol ships called Cutters and helicopters, the Coast Guard is well equipped to play a central role in law enforcement and rescue.
Coast Guard Day celebrations have primarily involved Coast Guards on active duty, those retired from the service, reservists and civilian members. In addition to celebrating their own day, Coast Guards also participate in the celebration of Armed Forces Day. It is a day to reflect on the origins of the Coast Guard and their contributions to the nation's safety and security.
US Coast Guard Day is also a time to acknowledge the vision of Alexander Hamilton who created the service simply to collect revenue. He foresaw that in a changing world, a Coast Guard body could be invaluable in protecting borders and protecting sovereignty. From its simple start, the Coast Guard we know today has undergone significant organizational changes with ever increasing responsibilities.
As you celebrate US Coast Guard Day, make an effort to learn more about the Coast Guard, their history and activities. You can also take part in the many activities in the week leading up to Coast Guard Day. Grand Haven Michigan is Coast Guard City and hosts a Coast Guard festival since 1924 and other events like parades, fireworks and entertainment.
