Is St John's Wort effective for Depression? First let us look at St John's Wort: it is a herbal extract that can be taken either as a capsule, tablet, herbal tea or tinctures. An advantage to using St John's Wort as an anti-depressant is the fact that there are fewer side effects, than those of traditional anti-depressants.


St John's Wort is used to treat mild cases of depression and nervous tension and to aid in healing of wounds as well as anti-inflammatory. St John's Wort is a Plant that is taken either as a capsule, tablet, herbal tea and tinctures. With this herbal treatment there are fewer side affects than there are with traditional chemical treatments. Avoid taking St John's Wort if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Medical Use of St John's Wort

In some country's such as Germany St John's Wort is being prescribed as a treatment for Depression Children, adolescents, and those concerned with price are quiet often prescribed St John's wort as a depression treatment Depending on the country you live in you may be able to get it over the counter at pharmacy's and supermarkets. However in other country it will only be available by prescription

Other Uses of St John's Wort

Helps to reduce the swelling after surgery. As well as sprains, bruises, muscle ache, toothache, cuts, trapped nerve

Can be used in the medication of skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and warts.

Can be used with bladder and kidney complaints such as inconsistency

Useful with treating diarrhea and viral infections such as herpes simplex and influenza.

Helps with some lung conditions such as congestion.

This herbal supplement can also aid in the healing process and offer anti-inflammatory as well.

The Effects of St John's Wort

On the whole St John's Wort is more bearable with fewer side affects. Some side effects that may occur are gastrointestinal symptoms, dizziness, confusion, tiredness and sedation. You may also have photosensitive at times, this means that the light might hurt your eyes and you may get sun-burnt easier.

It is advisable that before you start taking St John's Wort that you get medical advice as it may interfere with other medicine that you may be taking. Also it is important that you take the herbal supplement with food, otherwise you may get an upset stomach.

To conclude yes St John's Wort can be used as and effective treatment for depression, as long as it is taken in the right dosage and consistently
