Shoplifting may be the cheapest way to dress like a model, but there are much more virtuous and legal ways to look great for less. As someone who gave up the price tags without giving up couture, I know these tips can save thousands of dollars a year.
Pre-Owned Clothing: Pre-owned clothing is the biggest cost saver. I don't understand why anyone finds it objectionable. After all, hotels do not buy new sheets for each guest. eBay and consignment shops make couture affordable for everybody. It's okay to negotiate tactfully at consignment shops especially when an item has been on the floor a while or when the seasons are changing. Some of the best eBay bargains can be found by getting familiar with the different price ranges among designer labels (i.e., know the more expensive Chloe from See by Chloe) and going through the listings carefully for under priced items. Some brands like Ellen Tracy have excellent quality but not much of a trendy following to drive up the prices.
Department Store Lines: Department stores sometimes market their own lines with items made at the same factories with identical specifications as the designer brands but for about 50% less. Neiman Marcus has done this for years and this trend is likely to increase given the competition between department stores and designer boutiques in a tough economy.
Pay Per Wearing: When deciding if an item is worth the price, divide how much it costs by how much you're likely to wear it. A top that doesn't coordinate well with anything may be worth far less than a cashmere overcoat you'll wear every winter or black slacks in medium-weight wool or silk that look great with everything year-round.
Accessories: Luxurious accessories can upgrade any outfit. Invest in the best quality handbags and shoes you can afford at eBay and consignment stores. Flattering hats can make any outfit more stylish and versatile.
Maintenance: Buy timeless styles and take care of your fine clothing so it will last for years. Use cedar chips or cedar-lined chests to discourage moths. Store bags and shoes filled with tissue paper in their sleeper bags to help keep their shape and protect them from dust. Sleeper bags are also excellent for protecting shawls and other fine knits especially when travelling or commuting.
With a little planning and effort, you can wear couture and save enough money to eat more than the average model.
