How to crochet a scarf

by Marie Stine

Created on: August 24, 2009

A scarf is a quick easy project to crochet. Scarves make nice presents to give to someone special or to keep for yourself. They can be crocheted from many different types of yarns, however, consider who will be wearing the scarf and choose an appropriate yarn. For example, for a scarf worn by children make sure to select a yarn that will hold up to multiple machine washings. If the scarf is given as a gift, include the washing instructions.

This scarf pattern creates diamond motif in the scarf. It is worked from side to side and every row is finished off. This pattern is worked on the same side throughout and you do not turn your work at the end of every row. It will leave a fringe all along the edges of the scarf.

Materials Needed:

Chunky Yarn

Size H Crochet Hook

Chain 15 stitches for the foundation row. Cut yarn leaving enough a 5 inch tail for fringe. The fringe will be trimmed once the scarf is finished. It is better to leave a longer fringe and trim it down than to leave it too short. Join yarn with a slipstitch at the beginning of the row and single crochet across each stitch. Single crochet rows two and three finishing off each row.

On the fourth row single crochet the first seven stitches. On the eighth stitch do a front post double crochet. You do this by yarn over hook, insert hook in the previous row's stitch, hook yarn and pull it through. You should now have three loops on your crochet hook. Yarn over hook and pull through two loops, yarn over hook again and pull through the remaining two loops. You now have a front post double crochet which creates the point of the diamond motif. Single crochet the remaining seven stitches.

On the fifth row, single crochet the first six stitches, do a front post double crochet on the seventh stitch, single crochet the eighth stitch, do a another front post double crochet in the ninth stitch, and then single crochet the remaining six stitches.

Continue in this manner until the ninth row. Row nine will be the side point of the diamond. After that row, begin working the front post double crochets back toward the middle. For example; on row ten your front post double crochets will stitches 4 and 12. Row fourteen will complete the diamond and the pattern begins again.

Keep crocheting until the scarf is the desired length. Finish off the diamond pattern motif and single crochet three rows to end the scarf. Trim the side fringe and the scarf is finished!
