There is no economic justification for a government take over of health care.
The senate of the United States lost money when it ran its own restaurant. The post office loses so much money that they may soon eliminate Saturday mail delivery service. The government has lost so much money via Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that they bankrupted the western world and destroyed all our economies. If you love the way the government has wasted money on these and many other projects, you will be ecstatic over the trillions they will waste when they get their hands on one seventh of the economy of the United States-the health care system. Given the trillions that they will have to print and borrow to pull it off; the inflated dollar will be worth less than toilet paper very, very soon.
There are at couple of problems that Single Payer might address that I am almost certain the government will botch anyway. One is the problem of existing conditions. Currently insurance companies can deny coverage to folks with existing conditions. Under single payer everyone will be covered and as long as you are not too old, and as long as your existing condition is politically correct. Heart disease from obesity and cancer from smoking may not be considered politically correct.
Another problem is portability. Since everyone, even terrorists and illegal aliens will be covered, portability will be completely solved. You will have the same crappy coverage every where you go, even if you aren't working.
On the downside if for whatever reason the government does not recognize your diseases as being politically viable or if the cure to your disease is not politically correct. For instance, lets say only the juice of the endangered stink fungus will cure you, you must die for the greater glory of the state.
Since health care will be free, people will use too much of it so it will need to be rationed. This means there will be lines everywhere. There will even be lines to get your cancer treatment. There will be soothing music while you wait for months or even years for your cancer treatment. And you will save the state boat-loads of money by dying while you wait in line.
The truth of the matter is no one will ever know what the congressional health care plan for the nation is until it's enacted into law. One congressman actually stood up in front of an audience and proclaimed that he never read any of the bills he voted for because there is no use in doing so. It would take days for him to plow through a thousand pages of legislation he observed and besides, without two lawyers to explain what he just read, he still wouldn't understand the legislation anyway.
