Should teens have cell phones?

The new generation of teenagers has become more technologically savvy than any other generation and has become socially degraded because of it. The computerized devices at their disposal make communicating at high speed easy with thousands of types of devices.

Now it is true that we all use cell phones, and most of us would agree that we can't live without them, but what are the negative effects of presenting them to the teenagers at such a young age? How much time the average teen spends on the cell phone can be classified as unhealthy simply because it drastically reduces a teen's beneficial behavior toward other people. Instead of physically talking to others of their age group, they end up sending a short, monologue message that contains very few realistic words, mostly substituted by shortened versions of common language and acronyms called "text talk."

Some experts agree that a teen addiction to cell phones is common and express a deepening concern for a population that is falling deeper and deeper into the cybernetic world that we live in today. Millions of teens have experienced a period of time where they were without their cell phones for an extended period of time, and explain that even they saw a radical shift in their behavior patterns, often becoming moody or depressed. This is the period of time when an addiction to cell phones is most clear. Also, cell phones are advanced enough that they can log on to media suppliers through their phones and can purchase music, ring tones and wallpapers for the personalization of their cell phones. This habit becomes very expensive with the addition of a lengthy phone bill and many parents show concerns over this matter. There are many families living in today's economy who have a hard time making ends meet. This unfortunate fact is only worsened when an irresponsible teen or child in possession of a cell phone decides to have a spending spree, stacking up an already difficult phone bill. Kim Boatman shows her views on the subject of "Talking to your teen about cell phone usage" in an article for the website: http://www.earthlinksecurity.com/articles/cell_phone /index.html about a woman named Tammie Sandin; a mother who faced a ridiculous phone bill her son racked up, who says, "The acquisition of a cell phone is almost a rite of passage for American teens these days."
