Is the Internet hurting reading skills?
People say that being on line all the time hurts our reading skills because we are not reading books or doing educational things. People can be very opinionated on the subject. Usually people who do not use the computer often think that the Internet is ruining our reading skills.
I do not believe this to be true. I think that if anything the Internet is helping to make our reading skills better.
If it was not for the Internet there are a lot of people who would hardly read anything at all. I can say from experience that the Internet helps with vocabulary and with spelling. There are several ways that people can use these skills, in reading, writing, and even learning new words.
Writing skills are used mostly in e-mails. Other ways are in blogs, instant messages, and comments.
Vocabulary skills are improved by seeing words spelled out and also being able to look up words you do not know. You also hear or read words that you do not normally see.
Reading skills are the most important and are being improved the most. Everywhere you go online has something that you have to read.
While playing on line games it still requires you do some reading. When there are ads you have to read them unless you ignore them. You have to read the actual context on the web page. There are also books in the full version that can be bought on line to read. Some websites may offer books for free. When watching movies or playing music online you have to read the titles. Facebook and myspace or other blog websites require you to read everything.
The internet makes reading fun and gives people incintive to want to read more.
The reason why people do not think that internet helps increase reading skill is because they do not believe we read or use our skills enough.
They do not understand how much reading is really involved. They also do not understand that no matter what you do online there is some sort of reading involved or how much new vocabulary is available. The internet is a good source for learning. You can look up and study just about anything.
There are also online courses or college classes that people take online. This requires an extra amount of reading and studying.
The internet is not ruining reading skills if anything it is farthering people's reading skills.
