Whether you are looking to save money or switch to natural cleaning products, homemade glass cleaners are a great place to start. Everyone has glass or mirrors around the house that need to be cleaned and glass cleaners are one of the easiest homemade cleaning products to make.
Homemade glass cleaners can be made out of natural, non-toxic ingredients. This makes them safe for your skin which means you can skip the rubber gloves. They also have no toxic fumes so they won't irritate your respiratory system either.
It is easy to make an effective homemade glass cleaning solution out of simple non-toxic household ingredients. For the easiest glass cleaning solution all you need is an empty spray bottle, white vinegar and water. Mix one cup of water and one cup of the white vinegar in the spray bottle and shake to mix.
For a sparkling streak-free finish, you can also add isopropyl alcohol to the recipe. The alcohol evaporates quickly which keeps you from ending up with streaks while you clean. To make a glass cleaning recipe with alcohol, mix one cup water, one cup white vinegar, and one tablespoon of isopropyl alcohol.
When using isopropyl alcohol in your glass cleaning solution, remember that it is flammable so do not use it near flame or hot appliances. Also be aware that mixtures containing isopropyl alcohol or white vinegar can damage stone counters or floors.
Once you have made up your glass cleaner, make the most of it by using lint free cloths, otherwise your clean mirrors and glass will be ruined with streaks of small bits of lint. Newspaper also makes an excellent cloth for cleaning glass. It quickly absorbs the glass cleaner without leaving behind linty streaks.
A simple squeegee is another great tool for getting sparkling streak free windows and mirrors. A squeegee makes close contact to the glass and draws the cleaning solution firmly across the glass. The cleaning solution left at the end of the squeegee's path can be wiped away with a streak free cloth.
Sometimes, you may not need a glass cleaner at all. Instead, try a microfiber cloth. These special cloths are made of a material that will naturally rub the dirt right off of glass. You can then throw the microfiber cloth in the washing machine and reuse it again and again.
While commercial window cleaners are readily available, it is easy to make a simple and effective glass cleaner with common household ingredients.
